Chamoe

2023-08-30

"Chamoe" (pronounced CHA-meh) is an animated short film painted entirely in Photoshop over the course of a year.

On its face, Chamoe is about pregnancy cravings for out-of-season Korean summer melon. Ultimately, it's a story about the power of love, the strength of women, and the existence of magic. (To this day we've no idea where the chamoe came from!)

My mother is an exceptional storyteller and I've been recording her for a long time; the voice-over in the film is totally unscripted and stitched together from multiple phone conversations. I'm deeply moved by the love between my mother and her grandmother, and privileged to honor them with this film. My great-grandmother lives on in story, and in love.
